Our Story
Jangling Space started in 2016, operating as a pop-up at what was ‘Pollokshields Playhouse’ (itself a pop-up opposite Tramway). We then moved in as a tenant at Govanhill Baths, until we finally got what was our goal – a visible shopfront space for making so that we could build community out-in-the-open. We have been in Shawlands Arcade since 2018.
Founder Brian Morgan, who now Chairs our Board, developed the idea from scratch. Jangling Space was set up intentionally to be a cooperative; everyone gets a say (if they want to), everyone has a skill to be utilised by the whole.
The objects of the co-operative are to promote activities which benefit members and to:
Create a welcoming space where community can meet, talk, imagine, share, and do.
Connect people by engaging them in making beautiful things with meaning linking to Glasgow heritage.
Champion a working practice that is interdependent and collaborative.
Seeking to actively involve people as both participants and collaborators in the ongoing realisation of the space.
Foster a sense of belonging and decision-making in the local area where we work.
Seek a shift from a ‘sit back and be told’ culture to one of ‘making and doing’.
The majority of current Directors who continue to sit on our Board were also ‘Founder Members’ with Brian back in 2016 – all are southsiders!
Umar Ansari – Community Activist/Third Sector Manager
Selina Hales – Founder of Refuweegee
Frances Snee – Sustainable Development Student
Lucy Searle – Project Manager for renewable energy firm, Zebec
Rachel Brennan – Community Artist (often takes classes in our workshop)
All six Directors work to keep things ticking in the background, helping Andrea where needed. Brian continues to promote cooperatives as a method; a recent paper here describes how.
Talk to him if you have any ideas of setting up a cooperative and need a hand. If anyone wants to get involved with becoming a member of the Board or organising in any way, please do contact brian@janglingspace.org
