How It Works
becoming a member
One of the key values of a co-operative is open membership, and your first act as a Jangling Space member will be to attend classes. Although there is a fee for this, income is never a barrier to membership and those on fixed incomes are very welcome to contact us for a reduced or waived fee.
The classes
Over the course of two short sessions you’ll find yourself learning alongside other new members, helping each other right from the get-go as you pick up new skills. By making things together, we all feel more connected: to ourselves, to others around us, to our community. Creating that community is what we aim to achieve through our making process.
You’ll walk away with a finished piece, a reminder that everyone is capable of creativity, and a handful of new connections to build upon when you attend the workshop.
The co-operative workshop
When you’ve got your first piece under your belt, you’re ready for the main event: our co-operative workshop. Held 4 times weekly, this workshop is always free, always fun, and always has a great selection of biscuits on hand. Although everyone has a glass project to work on, social connection is our main purpose and you’ll see folk wandering from table to table for a chat, maybe lending a hand with other bits of upkeep or just spending a few quiet minutes clapping Charlie, our often-resident pup. People drift in from the arcade, sometimes wanting to talk glass and other times just wanting a listening ear. We’re here for all of it, and if the tea break lasts until the end of the workshop? We won’t tell.
At any given time we’ll be making up to 3 different Glasgow-relevant designs, which are sold to help cover costs. Each design has a limited run, and when we’ve reached the end we once again encourage everyone to submit ideas for the next batch. Many people assume they can’t help with the design side of things, but there’s always someone happy to sit down and sketch something with you based on that interesting railing you saw, or that window from a nearby close.
The members workshop
If you’ve been contributing to the co-op workshop for a while and have an idea for a project all your own, we can help. From consulting with you on design elements to providing access to space and materials, your vision will be realised in no time.
Other projects & Opportunities
Many of our members reach a point where they’d like to work on bigger projects but still have the social connection that the co-op workshop provides. Repairs and commissions are tackled together. There are frequent mini-classes to teach new techniques and hone existing skills. Members are encouraged to step up and teach classes, facilitate workshops, and generally keep things moving.
Meetings are held a few times a year to share ideas, bring up any issues, discuss the ongoing development of our values, and make sure we’re all still happy with the direction the co-op is moving in.
